"The chief source of art is man's pleasure in his daily work, which expresses itself and is embodied in that art itself."
William Morris (1834-1896)

For Baltimore

That tall piece you saw Steve throwing on an earlier post
We have finished making pieces for the ACC Baltimore show and are now glazing and firing but I did take some photos of works in process. Since we have been fortunate enough to exhibit at the ACC Baltimore show since 1998 in one venue or another (wholesale or retail or both), we do try to present new work for our galleries and/or our collectors. Some people, of course, have never seen us but others have and it is for them and our own creative spirit that we use the ACC Baltimore show as a debut for the year. Here are some photos of some of the special pieces before they go into the kiln.....

Winter Work

These short winter days have produced a bit of work. We are finishing the making and starting the glazing and firing part of the cycle. Our goal is the American Crafts Council show in Baltimore, MD at the convention center Feb. 20-24. The first couple of days we'll show wholesale samples to the trade for possible orders and the last three days we'll sell directly to the public. We also have a few orders waiting to be completed before we leave. Here are some photos to feast on:

Cat tastrofee

It was dark this January morning at 6 am.  Steve was feeding the livestock (Powder, Olive and Popeye).
He was stumbling around fixing himself a cup of Joe when he heard a LOUD crash from the studio.
With much trepidation, Steve ventured into the studio to discover this morning's disaster. Much to his surprise, Olive (our black kitty) ran past him into the house soaking wet and looking extremely guilty. From what we found, we can only assume that she tried to perform her triple jump to the highest decorating table to get her early morning drink. The bucket of water, the large, half decorated pot and Olive's thirteen pounds were too much for the table. Everything was a pile in the corner.
Now this is all circumstantial evidence as no one actually saw Olive do this but her being soaking wet and running away from the crime scene are at the core of the prosecution's presentation. We are putting the situation up for you, our jury, to make recommendations for her due punishment.
Here is the evidence:

Shangri-La

What fun to be in the studio again and work on my landscape pieces! After looking at many beautiful books and drawing some ideas in my notebook, I've started this year's special work before turning my attention to filling the gaps in our stock. Here is what I have so far:

Half Half

Glazing Day

Nice Firing!

December is one of those months that we find ourselves with one foot in and one foot out. Finishing up orders for galleries needing to fill their selves and for people buying gifts, we spend some time in the studio.

The other half of the time, we spent visiting friends and fixing up our home. This year Bailey Pottery and Equipment put on a Xmas spread worth going to.... especially since Steve won the door prize!!

Hope you too are enjoying the holiday festivities....

Latest firing goes well

Having experienced some  humility from losing half of our last firing, we were relieved to see this one come through perfectly.  Just a pinch of salt, a little sugar, more liquid and a little less time in the oven did it fine!
